A fantastic resource for Care Homes and Day Centres.
You will need –
A good sized floor space with chairs placed around the room is needed for this game.
Setting up and playing the game –
Pick a selection of around ten of the A5 laminated question cards from the pack.
Once players are safely seated, place the cards face up on the floor so everyone can get a good aim with the beanbag when it’s their turn.
Explain to the players, that in no particular order they will take it in turns to throw the beanbag at one of the cards. The card that the beanbag lands closest to or on is the question the group as a whole will discuss and answer with many of the questions having several possible answers. The player or the host may read out the question.
This game is better played with two hosts. One to do the passing round of the beanbag and assist with reading out the questions and the second host to look through the booklet and have the prompt question(s) ready for after the main question has been discussed and answered. Or, if you prefer, you can place the cards down with the letters of the alphabet face up and play the ‘Beginning With’ game.
The cards showing the letters of the alphabet can also be used in a word scramble game or, a nine letter word type game, where players can either make as many words from a particular nine letter word or a selection of letters picked at random. All you need is a shelf to place the letters on so everyone can see from where they are seated. There is an idea sheet for each of these games in the booklet.
This booklet also gives prompt question(s) for each question where there may be a catchphrase, humorous observation or well-known saying that is related to the question beforehand. Many of which the older generation will relate to and almost certainly find amusing so that as much social interaction and engagement with others can be had each time this game is played. Also, some questions only require certain answers. These are also in the booklet.
Designed and created by S&H Activities especially for people with dementia and the elderly, this game helps to bring people together with an activity where the topics and questions are based on and around everyday life, which the older generation will be able to relate to more easily. Many of the questions included can help as a guide in steering participants towards being nostalgic and reminiscent of the times and periods which they grew up in. This will help to ensure a more successful and meaningful activity is achieved.
This game, although a group activity can also be played with a person centred approach by choosing a selection of cards with questions that will interest or relate to each individual playing, and for those with limited mobility, the cards can be placed nearer for an easier aim when throwing the beanbag.
The A5 cards are laminated, so are easy to wipe clean and free from germs after each use.
